Wilmington Winter Guide: Best Things to Do in the Cooler Months

Winter is Wilmington's secret season. The beaches are quiet, rental rates are at their lowest, the restaurants have room, and from Thanksgiving to New Year's the whole area lights up. Daytime is often mild enough for a walk on the beach or a stroll along the river, and evenings are made for a good dinner downtown.

Here's how to spend a winter stay in Wilmington and at the beaches, updated for the 2026–27 season.

Holiday Lights and Boat Parades

The holiday season starts Thanksgiving weekend and runs straight through New Year's.

• Enchanted Airlie: Airlie Gardens turns into a half-mile trail of lights on November 27 and 28, then December 1 to 21, 2026. Entry is by timed ticket and dates sell out, so buy early and only through Airlie's official ticket link. It runs rain or shine.
• North Carolina Holiday Flotilla: Thanksgiving weekend (November 27 to 29, 2026) at Wrightsville Beach, with lighted boats on Banks Channel, a festival in the park and fireworks. The 2025 parade was its 42nd.
• Island of Lights at Carolina Beach: the lighting at the lake (November 27), a Christmas parade (December 4), a boat flotilla on the waterway (December 5), a tour of homes (December 12) and a New Year's Eve countdown on the boardwalk. See our Carolina Beach holidays guide for every detail.
• Boardwalk on Ice: outdoor skating on the Carolina Beach Boardwalk from November 27 to January 3.

Downtown on a Cool Day

Historic downtown Wilmington is at its best when it isn't 90 degrees. Walk the Riverwalk, about 1.75 miles along the Cape Fear River, past shops, cafes and the Battleship across the water, then duck into the galleries and boutiques on Front Street.

• See it by carriage: Springbrook Farms runs horse-drawn carriage rides through the historic district.
• Take to the river: Wilmington Water Tours offers narrated river cruises, including sunset trips.
• Hear a ghost story: the Ghost Walk of Old Wilmington leads lantern-lit tours through the historic district.
• Catch a show: Thalian Hall, a restored 1858 theater, hosts performances year-round.

In November, the Cucalorus Festival brings five days of independent and international film, talks and parties to downtown.

Where to Eat and Drink Downtown

Winter is the easiest time of year to get a table at downtown's best restaurants. A few favorites from our Local Guide:

History and Museums

Wilmington has plenty to do indoors when the wind picks up.

• Battleship North Carolina, the World War II battleship docked across the river from downtown. Much of the tour is below deck, so it's a good pick on a cold or rainy day, and winter means room to explore.
• Cape Fear Museum of History and Science, with hands-on local history and science and a giant ground sloth skeleton.
• Cameron Art Museum, with North Carolina art, changing exhibitions, a sculpture park and a good café.
• Bellamy Mansion Museum, an 1859 mansion and one of the city's best history tours.
• Burgwin-Wright House and Gardens, an 18th-century home downtown.
• Wilmington Railroad Museum, with model trains and railroad history by the river.

With Kids

The Children's Museum of Wilmington has two floors of hands-on play, including a toddler treehouse. Kids love climbing the ladders and exploring the decks of the Battleship, running the model trains at the Railroad Museum and the retro arcade at Retroscape. On a mild day, Riverfront Park's lawn by the river has room to run.

The Beach, Without the Crowds

The ocean is too cold for most swimmers in winter. It averaged about 47°F to 54°F from December to February at NOAA's Wrightsville Beach station. But the beaches are wonderful for long walks, shelling and sunrises, and you'll often have them nearly to yourself.

• Parking is free at Wrightsville Beach and Carolina Beach outside their March-to-October paid seasons.
• Dogs are welcome: leashed dogs are allowed on the sand at Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach and Kure Beach from October 1 to March 31. See our dogs on the beach guide.
• Walk The Loop at Wrightsville Beach, a flat, paved path of about 2.5 miles with water views the whole way.

Day Trips South

Head south to Kure Beach for the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher and the Civil War earthworks at Fort Fisher State Historic Site, whose visitor center tells the story of the fort. From there, the Southport–Fort Fisher ferry crosses the Cape Fear River to Southport for a day of shops and seafood. On the way back, stop at Carolina Beach State Park for a walk on its riverside trails.
